Understand Indian cashew kernel grades, quality checks, packaging and key information importers should confirm before ordering in bulk.
Cashew kernels are purchased internationally by food manufacturers, snack brands, confectionery businesses, wholesalers, hotels and retail distributors.
For bulk buyers, selecting cashews involves more than comparing prices. Kernel grade, colour, moisture, breakage, taste, processing, packaging and shipment conditions can all affect commercial value.
India remains an important participant in the international cashew trade. APEDA reported that India ranked fourth globally in exports of fresh or dried shelled cashew nuts in 2024, with a 6.60% market share.
Understanding Cashew Kernel Grades
Cashew grades are generally based on characteristics such as kernel size, shape, colour and whether the kernels are whole or broken.
W180
W180 kernels are among the largest commonly traded whole-white cashews. They are often selected for premium presentation and gifting products.
W210
W210 is another large whole-kernel grade. It may be used by premium snack brands, hotels and retailers seeking larger cashews.
W240
W240 kernels offer a relatively large appearance and are commonly selected for premium retail packs and food-service use.
W320
W320 is one of the most widely recognised commercial grades. It provides a balance between appearance, availability and price, making it suitable for many retail and wholesale requirements.
W450
W450 contains a higher number of smaller kernels per pound. It can be suitable where buyers require whole kernels at a more economical commercial position.
Splits and Pieces
Broken cashews, splits and smaller pieces may be appropriate for:
Bakery products
Confectionery
Sweets and desserts
Sauces and gravies
Nut pastes
Ice cream
Processed foods
Garnishing
Buyers should choose a grade according to the final application rather than assuming that the largest kernel is always the best option.
Quality Checks for Bulk Cashew Orders
Appearance and Colour
The kernels should match the agreed grade and colour specification. Buyers should define their tolerance for discolouration, spots and broken pieces.
Moisture
Excessive moisture can negatively affect texture, storage stability and product condition. The acceptable level should be specified in the purchase agreement.
Taste and Odour
Cashew kernels should have the expected natural flavour and should be free from undesirable odours or signs of rancidity.
Foreign Matter
Commercial consignments should comply with the buyerβs agreed cleanliness and foreign-matter limits.
Defect Tolerance
The contract should define acceptable levels for broken, scorched, shrivelled, damaged or otherwise defective kernels.
Testing and Compliance
Laboratory and food-safety requirements differ between importing countries. Buyers should provide their required testing parameters and documentation before the order is processed.
Choosing the Right Cashew Grade
The ideal grade depends on how the kernels will be sold or used.
Premium retail packs: Larger whole grades may provide stronger visual appeal.
Mainstream retail: W320 is commonly considered for its balance of size and commercial value.
Food manufacturing: Splits and pieces can be more cost-effective when kernels will be chopped, ground or blended.
Hospitality and catering: Grade selection depends on whether the cashew is served whole or used as an ingredient.
Gifting: Larger, uniform kernels may suit premium presentation.
Packaging Considerations
Cashew kernels require packaging that protects them from moisture, oxygen, contamination and physical damage.
Available formats depend on the supplier and order, but commercial buyers may discuss:
Bulk food-grade packs
Vacuum-packed formats
Flexible pouches
Tins or cartons
Private-label retail packaging
Custom pack weights
The packaging method should reflect the order size, transport duration, climate and destination requirements.
Information Buyers Should Request
Before placing a bulk order, confirm:
Cashew grade
Whole or broken-kernel requirement
Quantity
Crop or processing information
Moisture and defect limits
Packaging format
Shelf-life information
Required laboratory tests
Food-safety documents
Destination country and port
Delivery schedule
Inspection terms
A detailed specification reduces misunderstandings and makes quotations easier to compare.
Samples and Pre-Shipment Inspection
A pre-order sample can help buyers evaluate size, colour, flavour and general quality. For larger consignments, buyers may also discuss independent inspection or pre-shipment sampling.
The approved sample and written specification should form the reference for the commercial order.
